April 2018 Release / PowerApps

Posted by Frank Grimberg on

This past April, Microsoft released the latest update to Dynamics and the Business Application Platform.  Now, when customizing Dynamics, PowerApps shows in the corner of the solution window.  What is PowerApps?  What does this mean for you?  What does this mean for us at Prosoft?

What is PowerApps?

PowerApps started as a way to quickly create mobile applications that could integrate data from many different sources.  This is now what is considered Canvas PowerApps.  PowerApps data was stored in CDS (1.0).  For what PowerApps was originally designed for, it works great.

What is XRM/Dynamics Platform?

Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement is built on a mature business, data, and UI customization platform.  This foundation allowed for simple to complex business applications to be built quickly.

Smart Move

As GDPR requirements and other features became a mandate within Microsoft.  CDS 1.0 Business/Data Layer would need significant work to meet the demand.  With the Dynamics Platform, the business/data layer would allow Microsoft to quickly reach the mandates.  Basically, the Dynamics Platform became CDS 2.0.  Now the Dynamics UI component.  PowerApps was enhanced to include Model-Driven applications.  There are two different "Designer" UI's for PowerApps Model-Driven applications.  UI 1 - is the new designers built on top of the Dynamics Metadata for building out Entity (table) information.  When the new designer does not provide the functionality, PowerApps brings up Dynamics looking UI to allow the user to perform the design work.  UI 2 - is the Dynamics UI that we all know and love ;-).  UI 1 does not expose all the options that UI 2 does.

What does this mean for Prosoft?

At Prosoft we focus on training for Model Drive Apps utilizing the "UI 2" that provides the complete capability of the platforms  (CDS2.0/PowerApps Model-Driven).

What does this mean for you?

If you are a previous Customization student - nothing has changed for you.  If you are looking at taking a class.  Our customization/configuration class will provide the depth you need to master PowerApps Model-Driven Apps and Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement.
